NEXUS

The Nexus pass is a pass that allows facilitated entry into Canada or the United States if one is a citizen or permanent resident of either country. The program is meant for travelers who have a great track record in travelling, and travelers who pose a low flight risk. Applying for the program is easy, and applications are typically processed within 4-6 weeks of receipt.

The General Requirements for the Program:

  1. Be a US/Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  2. A completed and accurate application on the official website
  3. Pay a $50 USD application fee online

You may not be eligible for a NEXUS pass if:

  • You are inadmissible to the USA or Canada for any number of reasons (including immigration reasons)
  • You intentionally provide incorrect information on your application (if you are ever unsure of any questions on the application, it is always best practice to ask a legal professional for help).
  • You have been convicted of a serious criminal offence (in any country)
  • You have violated customs, immigration, or agricultural law in the past (and it has been recorded on your travel record)
  • You fail to meet other requirements of the NEXUS pass

How to Apply for the NEXUS pass:

  1. Apply online at https://goes-app.cbp.dhs.gov/main/goes
  2. Ensure that you have all of the necessary documentation needed for the application
  3. If you are a citizen of either country (Canada or the US), you must provide a photocopy of one of the following documents:

In Canada

  • a valid passport;
  • a birth certificate and photo ID;
  • a Canadian citizenship certificate or card; or
  • a Certificate of Indian Status.

In the United States

  • a valid passport;
  • a birth certificate and photo ID;
  • a U.S. citizenship certificate;
  • a certificate of naturalization; or
  • a border crossing card.

Permanent Resident

If you are not a Canadian or U.S. citizen, but you are a Canadian or U.S. permanent resident, you must provide a photocopy of one of the following documents:

In Canada

  • a valid Permanent Resident Card, or
  • a Record of Landing.

In the United States

  • a valid Permanent Resident Card

Once you have provided the $50 USD fee along with your online (or paper application), the application process is fairly straightforward. You will typically receive an email within the 4-6 weeks of submitted your application (if you have met the eligibility criteria) to attend an interview. Once you have passed your interview, your NEXUS pass is usually mailed out within 4 weeks.
